Kathryn Bruner James

kathrynjames_sm      Kathryn Bruner James received her bachelor’s degree in political science from Albion College in 2002 and her Juris Doctor from the University of Detroit Mercy (UDM) School of Law in 2007. She received awards for her work with the UDM chapter of the National Lawyers Guild and for receiving the highest grade in her Civil Rights Litigation class. While in law school, Kathryn worked as a law clerk for: the State Appellate Defenders Office; Pitt, McGehee, Mirer, Palmer & Rivers, P.C. (now Pitt, McGehee, Palmer & Rivers); and Julie H. Hurwitz, P.C.

      Since receiving her law license from the State Bar of Michigan in December 2007, Kathryn has been admitted to practice law in the U.S. Eastern District of Michigan, the U.S. Western District of Michigan, the U.S. Northern District of Ohio, and the U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals. She became a partner at Goodman Hurwitz & James, P.C. in 2017.

     Kathryn grew up in the Metro Detroit area. She and her husband, Joshua James, have lived in Ferndale, MI since 2002. The couple welcomed their beloved dog, Hank, to their family in 2015. The family grew once again in 2016 with the birth of their daughter.

      Kathryn’s public service activities have included: Chairperson of a non-profit organization, Citizens for a Fair Ferndale; Election Inspector for the City of Oak Park, Michigan; and Treasurer and Volunteer Coordinator for Ferndale for Instant Runoff Voting. In 2015, Kathryn was recognized as Ferndale’s Citizen of the Year. Kathryn is also involved with the Detroit & Michigan Chapter of the National Lawyers Guild.
